VIDEO #2 Aran Hearts Throw, by Bonnie Barker



hi again this is Bonnie Parker with Bondi Beach a calm and you have come to video number two of the errant hearts throw okay before we get started on this I mentioned at the end of the last video about changing to a larger hook size you need to change up to a size K it's also a ten point five or six point five zero millimeter crochet hook or whichever one you've chosen to use if you decided that your gauge was too small or larger whatever so it's the largest hook of the three hooks that will be working with now so what we're going to do to start this okay we should have our front side facing I just chained one and the directions say to single crochet in the first stitch let's go ahead and do that single crochet in the first stitch okay now it says to chain one skip the next stitch to work a popcorn in the next stitch okay so we're going to skip this stitch and we're going to work a popcorn the popcorn the way I do them for this particular pattern is you're going to single crochet four times in the same space okay just like so now this is the tricky part if there is a tricky part okay we're going to let that loop be up higher and we're going to go back to the very first single crochet of this cluster we're going to put our stitch in here and we're going to grab the loop pull it through like so and bring it bring the loop back don't leave it real big bring it back to it you know the size of the diameter of your hook and chain one to two closed off the popcorn now we're going to skip the next stitch and then we're going to single crochet in the next stitch we're going to chain one and I'm just talking with the pattern they're going to repeat from the asterisk which is to chain one like we just did skip the next stitch here and then do another popcorn in the next stitch which is for single crochets like so whoops it's three four pull it up a loop a little bit stick your hook and the very first single crochet of the cluster and pull that loop through chain one skip the next stitch single crochet chain one skip the next row che single crochet and then into another popcorn one which is four two three four and pull up a loop stick your hook in the first popcorn of the cluster okay take the loop that you just pulled just bring it on through chain one skip the next stitch and then single crochet and the next let me stop and show you what I've done so every other stitch is the one that you're going to be crocheting in so you're going to do this all the way across let me do it just a couple more because I know this is tricky chain one skip the next stitch four single crochets in one place in the next stitch here pull up a loop insert your hook into the first of the four stitches and then hook this loop pull through chain one okay I'm going to and then whoops before I do that skip the next stitch and then single crochet so I'm going to go ahead and do this all the way across my row I will come back to you when I'm finished and I'll show you the ending of this row okay I've come all the way across with my popcorn stitch this is row number ten and I'm going to skip this stitch continuing with the repeat here and then it says simply two single crochet in the last stitch just like so we do not single crochet in the turning chain here okay now we're ready to start row eleven I'm going to chain one turn and it says do single crochet in the first stitch you can do that and the next thing it says is chain one okay skip the next stitch we're going to single crochet in the next chain one space which happens to be the very top of the popcorn itself okay we're going to chain one and then we're going to single crochet in the next chain one space which is the space right here I can feel it right there it's the chain one that we would make after the single crochet okay chain one again skip the next stitch and we're going to single crochet in the top of the next popcorn chain one single crochet and the chain one space right here we skip this stitch okay chain one skip the single crochet and single crochet in the top of the popcorn just like so chain one skip the next stitch let me just verify that case chain one and then with single crochet in the next chain one space there chain one skip the single crochet single crochet in the top okay we're going to do that all the way across I'll take it across and then show you what it looks like afterwards okay I've worked this all the way across and you get to the last stitch and then you simply single crochet in the last stitch okay now we're ready to start row number 12 this is another popcorn row chain one turn you can see what we've done here so what's going to happen here the popcorns are going to be alternating they're going to be falling in between the other popcorn stitches that we did okay so row 12 says single crochet in the first single crochet let's go ahead and do that okay this says to chain 1 skip next stitch and single crochet in the next chain one space so we're going to skip this stitch and we're going to single crochet here ok now it says to chain 1 skip next stitch here and then we're going to do a popcorn in the next chain 1 space which is right there so therefore single crochet pull up a loop stick our hook in the first of the four stitch cluster grab that loop pull it through and chain 1 ok and then some yarn trouble here so after we chained 1 we're going to skip the next stitch and we're going to single crochet in the chain one space we're going to chain 1 skip the next stitch and we're going to do a popcorn in the next stitch pull up a loop sticker again first of the four cluster hook the loop pull it through do a chain one on top skip the next stitch single crochet in the chain one space chain one and I'll do one more popcorn and I'll show you how this is coming together okay and now go ahead and single crochet there pull up the loop I'm going to show you how these stitches are alternating back and forth back and forth okay we're going to finish this row and then I'll show you how to end this okay now we've come to the end of the row we've got one chain one space left I'm going to go ahead and work the four single crochets for the popcorn pull up a loop and pull the loop through the first stitch chain one and then I was going to simply work a single crochet in the last stitch like so okay now we're going to chain one and four rows number 13 we are simply going to repeat row 11 which is and a single crochet in the first stitch single crochet there you go in the top of that chain one which is the top of the popcorn stitch then we're going to chain one we're going to single crochet and the chain one space chain one skip the single crochet and single crochet in the top of the chain one which is the top of the popcorn chain one single crochet in the chain one space chain one skip the single crochet and chain one in the top of the popcorn stitch so we're going to work that the same as row 11 all the way across as soon as I finish that I'll come back and show you the ending of the show okay I'm at the end of the row here I'm going to have chained one going to skip this last single crochet single crochet in the chain one space and then I'm just simply going a single crochet in the last single crochet there okay now I'm going to chain one turn okay we just completed rows 11 sorry rose 10 11 12 and 13 okay so row 14 I'm going to chain 1 get a single crochet the first stitch chain 1 skip the next stitch here then I'm going to popcorn in the next chain 1 space one two and strut it again three four pull it the loop and we're going to pull that loop through the first stitch okay you know I don't like that so I'm going to pull that out if you ever don't like the way things look you can always just kind of pull them back out and give it another try there seem to be a lot of strands individual strands showing I just didn't like the way that looked okay that doesn't look better I do like that better okay and we're going to skip this stitch and we're going to single crochet in the next stitch and this actually this row is almost exactly like row number of ten okay so for the next next we're going to skip this stitch we're going to a popcorn stitch okay and so on let's skip the next stitch single crochet in that chain space let me just show you how how this is going okay so whenever you do the popcorn stitch with the front row front side facing the popcorn should be in between the other popcorns of the previous row just like so very symmetrical okay so I'm going to complete that that is row 14 it's completed in the same way as row number 10 and then after that you're going to repeat rows 11 through 14 two times okay so you're going to do 11 rows 11 12 13 14 and twice so that's going to give you it's going to give you four more rows or four more you know rows that have the popcorn in them it'll be a total of eight crocheted rows because the rows in between do not have the popcorn but more they're crocheting the spaces for the popcorn if that makes sense and then after you do that you're going to repeat rows 11 and 12 one more time so that's going to give you c4 so when we finish this you should have you should be able to count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 you should be able to count eight eight rows that have the popcorn in them if that makes sense okay so won't you go ahead and work on that and I will come back after I've completed all those extra pop corn rows and I'll show you what I have I'll show you how to finish this out on this section okay welcome back we have completed now rows number ten through 24 working the popcorn stitch and let me go ahead and show you these rows so Row one was what was with the popcorn I'm sorry row ten and then the stitch with the bot popcorn on the opposite side we needed the single crochet chain one single crochet that is row 11 then 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 if you can see that so I like to kind of keep track of this in a better way than just counting those bulking numbers I like to just count popcorn rows so just know that you're going to need eight rows with the popcorn so we can easily count those 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and that will come in helpful to you when you do the rest of the Afghan once you pass the center motif with the popcorn hearts okay now one very very important thing I don't want to neglect to tell you we've been using the size K hook alright well now we're going to change back to the size J hook okay it's a little bit smaller hook because the stitches that we've been working needed the larger hook because they tend to pull well the next row of single crochets you remember tends to curl if you aren't careful so we're changing to the smaller hook to work this row okay the first thing we're going to do the single crochet in the first single crochet and then we're going to work two single crochets in each chain one space across so two single crochets in the top of the popcorn two single crochets in the chain one space between the popcorn stitches two single crochets and the top here and two single crochets between them so I'm going to do this all the way across and this should give us bring us back to our 182 stitch to a two stitches per row okay I will finish this row and come back to you I want to show you the last three stitches of this row so this is the last chain one stitch you're going to put two stitches there actually there's one more chain chain one stitch two stitches there and then we're going to put one stitch in the last single crochet okay all right now let me show you what we have so far okay we have our low front Ridge stitch stitches our rows of arrow stitch and two rows of single crochet low front Ridge and then we have our rows of popcorn which are ate popcorn acrost of course many more rows than that okay now I'm going to give you a hefty assignment in addition to this for this particular video the next set section is the second set of front ridges and arrow patterns this would be rows 26 through 33 which simply say to repeat rows you guessed it 2 through 9 one more time so after this row that we've ended with here I'm not going to demonstrate this because I've done this in detail on video number one if you need the extra video help feel free to go back and watch the first video it will be exactly the same except that you're working on you know this row that was on work to discontinue the popcorn stitch okay make sure you you can keep the same medium size or J or 10 size hook so you're going to go back and you're just you're going to work the low front Ridge which will be row 2 all the way through row 9 again and then once you complete that you can go on to video number 3 okay talk to you later guys bye bye you

  3. I have taken all of video 1 apart 3 times because my popcorn stitches come out wrong and I can’t understand why. I love this throw and I love crocheting, so needless to say I’m crying. After I dc 3 times in 1 stitch I pulled up the yarn but I guess I am confused about where I insert my hook. Is it the sc stitch or the top of the dc. I can’t see where you placed the hook. Please help me. Thank you so much for your beautiful work.

  5. Need some help. The left side of my work is leaning in on the popcorn stitch rows. The first popcorn row has 45 popcorns, the 2nd has 44, 3rd has 44 and my 4th row of popcorns has 43. What am I doing wrong??

  6. I have ripped out the popcorn row a few times, now after "thinking" I completed it and doing row 25 I have discovered I lost Alot of stitches somewhere! Beautiful pattern and wish I could successfully make it but I may have to give up, I am getting so frustrated ☹

  7. Hello, thats a so nice Projekt. What is the multiple when i want a bigger blanket. I habe made one with 182 stiches and now i will do a bigger one. How Mandy stiches must i make at the begining. My english is not the best, i hope you understand what i mean. Its a great work. Good bless you

    Please can you tell me how many popcorn stitches we should have at the end of this row ? I've got 45 , on your video , when you finished the row after popcorn stitch and sc + chain 1 I still have got 3 stitches left 😥 …. what I have done wrong ? Xx

  9. Hi Bonnie. I love your patterns and thank you for taking the time and effort to do your CALs. I am making this throw for my sister and want it perfect. I just finished row 13 and did a stitch count of 183. Is this correct, or should I rework 10, 11, and 12 to make sure I am getting a 182 stitches across?

  10. My popcorns were flat using 4 SC. I posed the question to my crochet group on wether to use 5 or 6 SC instead. They all told me to use 4 dc instead. They certainly pop more, but before I continue, is there a reason not to? Are the popcorns supposed to be more subtle?

  11. Hi I was wondering if you could help me… I have started this throw and really enjoying making it, although I have a problem i have done 12 rows of popcorn stitch (Inc sc row in between). Now on the 12th row I keep coming out with 133 stitches instead of 132 and not sure why, on the 11th row I have 132 but then get the extra stitch every time on the 12th. Iv pulled it out so many times and redone I just can't drop this extra stitch its so frustrating. Do you have any advise on what I'm doing wrong or what I could do to resolve this matter pls.

    Ps love all your tutorials, I have learnt so many different techniques, stitches and patterns from yourself. Definitely one of my fav tea hers on YouTube you explain everything so well xx

  13. I like the pattern but want it bigger and in multiple colours. I started with the pattern of 183 stitches just to try to get the hang of it, but keep getting stuck at the 3rd row lol. My daughter loves the cable and I want to make a big throw/blanket for her in 3 colours. Help!? I really liked the hearts. I just started crocheting 2 months ago and started off with granny squares. My knitting is better, but I wanted to learn crochet.
    I pick it up faster by watching, but obviously need to learn the written patterns as well.

  14. I just started this blanket as well as it is beautiful. The biggest hook I have is 6.50.. I don’t have a 6mm hook at all in my set so I used the 5.75mm as that was the closest I had to 6mm. Hoping it’ll work just fine.

I've ripped out 5 rows of popcorn stitches twice because although I'm being very careful in my count and come up with a total of 45 popcorns each row, the right side of my work starts leaning in towards the left at an angle. What am I doing wrong? Thank you. Hope you can reply soon so I can continue this beautiful afghan

Hi Bonnie, Thank you for your videos, I’ve been trying to follow along and make this blanket and I follow better by watching than I do reading, however; when you’re doing row 13, you say to repeat row 11, but in row 11, (5:00) you chain up one, single crochet in the first stitch, chain one, skip the next single crochet then single crochet in the top of the popcorn stitch, chain one then skip…when you’re doing row 13, (right about 9:15 in video), you say “repeat row 11”, but you did two single crochet in the very beginning without a chain 1 in between them and no skipping, <—This is how I’ve been doing mine until I just caught that so now I’m confused, do you put a chain 1 space in between the very first two single crochets like row 11, or is row 13 different in this one respect? row 10 & 12 start off different in the beginning of the row so I’m not sure which direction I’m supposed to follow along with: the video or written directions. (I apologize this is so long, I’m still trying to learn) thanks for taking the time to make this. Hope to hear from you soon!

I also did a pattern called grandmother's rose garden. Done with the popcorn which made the diamond pattern , done with an Afghan hook. I have missed placed my pattern.   25. Finding it really hard to follow where you are putting your stitches for the rows in between the popcorns. Just too frustrating. Love the pattern but will sadly be frogging and trying something else.

  26. Could anyone tell me how many balls this throw takes. I have downloaded one pattern that says 10 and I then saw the same pattern on Red hearts site that says 16. The patterns are the same in every other way. Thanks

  27. Hi Bonnie, I'm 62 and learning crochet however have knitted since l was about 20. You're very good at teaching crochet, slow and easy. l understand everything your saying and doing even though I'm from Australia and our stitches are different. This is the first pattern I've looked at of yours and its grabbed me lol. The only problem l have is the technology of the wool ie worsted weight I'm not quiet sure if this is 8 ply or 12 ply I'm thinking it might be 12 ply as you went up to a large hook. Do you have the time to respond to me, I'd be grateful Barb

  28. Hi Bonnie this throw is beautiful but when watching it I really can't see where you are putting the stitches your finger cover the stitches also row 13 you say it's the same as row 11 but you do ch 1 after crocheting in 1st
