Top 10 Unsportsmanlike Moments in Pro Sports

[Narrator]: These athletes broke the rules and faced the consequences. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 unsportsmanlike moments in sports. [Announcer]: Oh, you’ll hate to see this! [Narrator]: For this list, we’re focusing on displays of bad behavior, unsportsmanlike conduct and violence during or after sporting events that simply made our jaws drop. It wasn’t his first altercation and it wouldn’t be his last. However, we’ve chosen the Monday Night football game where Bill Romanowski projected bodily fluid onto an opponent. That’s right, the Denver Bronco linebacker spit in J.J. Stokes’ face after the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver allegedly goaded him to do it. The incident also raised issues of racism since Billy is caucasian and Stokes is African-American. [Romanowski]: Spitting in a guy’s face does not belong on a football field. You know, it’s inexcusable. You know, I wish I could have that back. I can’t, you know. [Narrator]: Fights are pretty commonplace in hockey. But even for the rock ’em, sock ’em playing style of the ‘70s, this brawl involving a Boston Bruins defenseman and New York Rangers fan was really out of the norm. [Announcer]: Oh, this could be bad! Oh, there go the Bruins! [Narrator]: To catch a spectator who’d assaulted a player, the Bruins team leapt into the stands. [Announcer]: They’re gonna pull that guy apart. [Narrator]: But most shocking was when Mike Milbury hit the offender with his shoe, resulting in multiple player suspensions and fines. [Reporter]: Kerrigan was in a practice session right next door at Cobo Arena. She was coming off the ice getting ready to do an interview with a reporter from Pittsburgh when all of a sudden she was attacked. [Narrator]: While the Olympics are competitive, this went beyond anything we’d come to expect from figure skating. [Kerrigan]: Why? Why? [Narrator]: To increase her chances at the Olympics, Tonya Harding conspired to have rival Nancy Kerrigan taken out of the picture. [EMT]: What did he hit you with? [Kerrigan]: I don’t know, some hard hard black stick, something really really hard! [Narrator]: Kerrigan was then unable to participate in the U.S. Figure Skating Championship, clearing the way for Harding’s victory. Though both made the Olympic team, Harding eventually faced charges for her involvement. [Announcer]: What a great moment for Nancy Kerrigan. [Narrator]: He may be one of baseball’s most talented second basemen but that doesn’t mean he always kept himself in line. During a 1996 game against the Blue Jays, Roberto Alomar objected to John Hirschbeck’s call by spitting in the umpire’s face. Though the Baltimore Orioles player claimed Hirschbeck had made racist comments, Alomar was suspended for five games. The two eventually reconciled. [Alomar]: Everybody makes mistakes in life, and I did make a mistake, and hey, life goes on. [Narrator]: Though Rosie Ruiz maintained she ran the Boston Marathon in its entirety for years after, it’s generally accepted that the Cuban American cheated her way to the finish line. The fact that Ruiz barely broke a sweat and wasn’t familiar with common runners’ terms was just the starting point for people’s suspicions. [Reporter]: Is someone coaching you or advising you? [Ruiz]: No, I advise myself. [Narrator]: For while there wasn’t any video surveillance, witness reports that she took the subway and official investigations ultimately revealed the truth. [Announcer]: Nobody knew yet that six months before Rosie allegedly took a subway to the finish line of the New York Marathon. So this was actually her second route, and she almost pulled it off. The big mistake was coming in first. [Narrator]: Though the Liverpool player was charged with the racially-motivated abuse of Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in 2011, it’s the violent conduct charge he accepted two years later that lands here. While playing a Premier League match, Luis Suárez sunk his teeth into Chelsea player Branislav Ivanović. [Announcer]: Looks like he’s actually sunk his gnashes in there. [Narrator]: Instead of the standard three-game ban, the Liverpool forward was forbidden from playing 10 for the serious nature of his actions. [Speaker]: This is not the first time he’s bitten someone in a football match. It just can’t happen again. I firmly believe this puts him in the last chance [to remain a] Liverpool player. [Narrator]: This scandal caused so much damage to baseball that officials banned the players involved for life. Referring to the conspiracy between eight White Sox players and pro gamblers to deliberately lose the 1919 World Series games, … [Gandil]: Well, I think that we can’t be beaten. We can only beat ourselves. You fellas know what I mean. [Narrator]: …this fixing of the MLB championship also achieved notoriety for the alleged participation of legendary athletes like Shoeless Joe Jackson. [Announcer]: Here we go again, the rematch we’ve waited a long time to see. [Narrator]: Mike Tyson was already seen as a wild and crazy boxer, but his 1997 rematch against Evander Holyfield topped anything and everything else he’d done in the ring. [Announcer]: Oh, and some nasty stuff in there. There looked to be a bite almost. [Narrator]: During “The Sound and the Fury” fight, Tyson didn’t only bite his opponent on the ear once, but twice! [Announcer]: There, he bites him there. You see that there’s teeth. And Holyfield in agony at that point, trying to rip free. [Narrator]: He was disqualified and later stated his actions were in response to Holyfield’s un-penalized head butting. [Announcer]: Oh, Wallace right at Artest. This has the potential to be serious if they don’t get between. [Narrator]: Though the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons fight began on the court, it quickly degenerated into the NBA’s most infamous brawl when they took it to the stands: … [Announcer]: Artest is in the stands! [Narrator]: … after a spectator threw a drink at Ron Artest, pro b-ballers and fans began throwing punches and drinks at each other. The Pacers-Pistons brawl led to multiple player suspensions and criminal charges for several fans. [Announcer]: What a sad scene here at the Palace. [Narrator]: Before we unveil our number one pick, here are a few honorable mentions. It was during France’s return to the 2006 World Cup Finals when, seemingly out of nowhere, Zinedine Zidane used his noggin’ to hit Marco Materazzi in the chest. Zidane was sent off the pitch, and Italy won the game in the shootout. [Announcer]: He makes it. Italy, World Cup champions 2006. [Narrator]: It was later revealed that the Italian player had taunted and insulted Zidane. While this kind of behavior wouldn’t necessarily be considered the craziest reaction in a normal game, the fact that it occurred during the world’s biggest game and on the biggest stage lands it on top. Do you agree with our list? What do you think is the most unsportsmanlike moment in sports? With new top tens published daily, be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com. [Speaker]: You have to make sure you provide adequate security so these kind of incidents don’t escalate to the astronomical proportions that it did tonight. That is the bottom line.

  1. Of course they pull the race card at no. 10. White people be careful to only lose your temper against other whites.

  2. Absolute bullsh*t! A guy got paralyzed yet they only feature him in the honorable mentions? I'm pretty sure a meh headbutt in a sport full of wieners doesn't deserve the #1 spot.

  3. Ndamukong Suh stomping all over an opposing player after the whistle was blown should have been ranked.

  4. You forgot to mention, that it was Zidanes last game, as he was retiring which makes it worse. And that's what people remember him for now.

  5. Romanowski defined trash before Burfict came around…and both had their careers end the same way (and rightly so)

  6. There was a rugby league player who stuck his finger into another players bum hole during a game
We still call it doing a Hopoate

  7. Micheal Jordan trash talked constantly and is an asshole in real life…. but he gets a free pass because hes Michall…… go and get fucked.

  8. That headbutt body Italian was bulshit it soccer as usual pretend you're dying if it looks like somebody hit you that's why I'll Never Love Soccer I watch it but these guys are great actors on the pitch.

  9. THIS ISNT THE FIRST TIME HE BIT SOMEONE??? WTF is he a WEREWOLF?? Don’t let him play if he keeps chewing on players!!

  10. The worst ever is Conor McGregor. In Every Aspect Every Reason. Exposed as a Fraud a Cheat a Proven Quitter and alleged rapists but of all else a Horrible piece of Shit and Twitter Whorerior

  12. This list is nonsense. Number 1 should have been Schumacher almost decapitating Battiston in Seville in 1982. The dirtiest foul in football history.

  13. I'm surprised why realmadrid captain Sergio Ramos isn't on the list !
He honourably deserve a spot on this list.

  14. These athletes are lucky none of the people they punched had knives or guns because they would have been seriously hurt

  15. The Italians were taunting Zidane the whole game with racist insults, many directed at his mother. The Italians always get away with this crap, and the refs let them. In any case, the Italian player is a forgotten punk, Zizou is one of the greatest players in history and a great manager.

  16. That Pedro Martinez/Don Zimmer honorable mention should really just be Don Zimmer. He charged Pedro. And I don't care how old you are. If you charge someone, be prepared to get put on your ass.

  17. I think Zidane being #1 isn't about what happened but WHERE it happened. During the World Cup, the biggest game in Soccer with millions of people of watching. If it was during a normal exhibition match it probably wouldn't have been as big a deal.

  18. Yeah WatchMojo, I'm not condoning biting ears but when you get head butted so many times, you tend to lose your temper a bit.

  19. Ben Thatcher and his elbow technique.. I'd have leathered him. Disgusting tosser.

Luis Suarez also.. To bite another person is deserved of a good old fashioned pasting

  20. Worst unsportsmanlike moment was in boxing: Butler vs Grant it was completely shameful that guy Butler should have been arrested.

  21. Number one looks as if it was planned. Last game ever. Might be a great coach one day 🤔 How many CL has he won? As manager? 🤔

  22. Just because a white guy spat in a black guys face doesn't make it racism you utter half baked libtarded potatoes

  23. Okay the headbutt to the chest could have not caused that much could have not caused that much pain please! He obviously was faking it!!

  24. Two things. First, Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals. Thankfully, the asshole finally got what was coming to him in the form of Vegas Golden Knights defenseman, Ryan Reaves. Tom Wilson finally got his long awaited chance to become intimate with the hockey ice.

Second: the entire team of the San Jose Sharks (you got the scumbag Joe Thorton, who's so afraid of getting his ass kicked that he resorts to jabbing players in the throat with his hockey stick), Evander Kane, little bitch boy dillan, and Brent Burns. Of course, it's no surprise that this team is full of crybaby's looking to purposely hurt other players when they're losing, I mean, Raffi Torres came from the sharks. Seems everyone on the team is trying to live up to his legacy of failure.

Then you have the Boston Bruins. I'll let you figure that one out, but it starts with a player named Brad Marchand.

  25. Naw, Rangers fan were gross. It’s amazing this hadn’t happened more often. And Bertuzzi-Moore was obscene and should have resulted in that creep’s ban from hockey. Permanently.

  26. Can tell this is American… We could name a LOT even worse moments that didnt make your list here. One example, Eric Cantona battered a fan after he was sent off for Manchester United against Crystal Palace, that was worse than the Zidane Headbutt.

  27. You can’t just throw drinks at nba players and expect them not to throw shade. Sit down watch the game watch your mouth and enjoy yourself

  28. Zidane did that because the other guy touch his shirt. Then Zidane sayed you can have my shirt after the game. Then the other guy sayed no I want your sister shirt instead. Then Zidane head him

  29. You really can't put Mike Tyson on this list because he was retaliating because of holyfield's headbutts and for some reason senial mills lane couldn't see it.

  33. Here’s what funny!! For as much as soccer (football) shouldn’t be a contact sport??!!! Then why don’t you make it a non contact sport!!!!?? You want football type contact sport??? Then play rugby!!!

  34. Here’s what funny… In the health field for saving people’s lives; if I did anything like this, I’d be fired!! So why aren’t less forms fired who only provide entertainment??

  35. Not Defending Milbury but 1 someone did assault his teammate 2 it could've been Worse it could've been a Skate
