Major mistakes to avoid when shopping for clothes online ǀ Justine Leconte

hi everyone it's just in I'm doing this video today because I have been shopping online and it went wrong and I thought no don't you know better by now so there are very easy things that you can check before you hit that purchase button and if you do that if you check just a bit better a bit longer you save so much more time in returning the PCs making sure you do get very fun et cetera so here are five mistakes that you will not make anymore after watching this video it fits the model so it will fit me I wanted to buy that red top I check the sizing I looked it up in the size table it was fine there it said waist bust hip measurement okay that's my size I'm gonna get size and then I did something that you guys should do too so far so good I'm doing it right until now I looked up the height of the model because I'm officially told I'm not regular size I'm 511 in inches or 1 meter 79 so when the model is 170 usually that's the average on websites for for commercial pictures everything that they wear top will be too short on me so that I know and I checked in our example of that red top it said Maya is 1 meter 79 and she's wearing size s great she's even exactly exactly my high so perfect what she's wearing where it's falling on her will be long enough for me to don't deal purchase click and then I received the top and it looks like this obviously too short it's barely hiding my belly clearly not fitting what happened I'm not just tall I also have a long torso and I trusted the pictures I saw how much lower than her waist the top is landing and I thought will do the job for me I should have looked for the length of the garments usually the description would say the garment has a total length of X centimeters that's the information you're looking for it's measured at the back from the bottom of the neck at shoulder level and then you go down to the hem in midgel following your spine if your body is not a standard so if you don't have the exact proportions of the model just bigger or smaller for instance if you're petite if you're tall if you have a longer torso if you have shorter arms longer arms you need to check the length of the garment you cannot rely solely on the pictures that you see even if the girl there has your exact height and pretty much the same size as you have the thing is if the patterns are well made for that design you're looking at then the length varies according to the size for the things that I designed for my clothes each piece in each size has a different length so often the total length of the garment will not be indicated in the product description on the product page of the website you're looking at but if you write to the customer service they must be able to tell you according to a table if this is your size this is the total length of a garment if they call to that that's an alarm signal for me it's a bad sign it means that they don't have their patterns under control that's typically the case where it says full smaller Falls Lodge it depends I thought I was M but actually this size is like an S that should ring a bell it should tell you ooh cheap production it's not going to be good quality I cannot rely on the fit that's typically a stall what I wouldn't buy anything I answer questions from my own customers every day I do that personally not my team when they have questions about sizing because I'm the one who knows the patterns number two I am always a size 36 I know my size in pens it's very easy I'm pretty standard indeed and I'm almost always a size 36 according to the EU sizing system European size and I wanted those lovely wool pens so I ordered them and I like the idea that they sit a little bit low on the waist I found that cool it's a little bit baggy a little bit relaxed very comfortable then I received this in those pants I looked like an eight year old wearing her dad's trousers it looks like Charlie Chaplin what doesn't fit here is the design itself see these tucks underneath the waistband they give me more space but I didn't any more space here if you look at it from the side see you could fit both legs in here so what happened understanding your correct size is not enough as you can see in this example you also need to look at the details at the view from all different angles you want to see a picture from the from the side and the back so you can see the details like these tucks in this case they change the design they changed the shape of the pants and it changed the fit so in fact I should have gone one size down and I still would have had enough space everywhere you wouldn't have been tired at all because I'm a pear shape so my largest area is the hip level and there you see in distance at the hip level you have plenty of space what's the return policy again this is one that probably happened to everyone it happened to me again recently for instance I ordered this nice umbrella on a French website thinking I will support my country's industry and order one that's made in France shipping costs are the same everyone Europe so fine let's do this problem the umbrella arrived broken that's when I started to look for the return policy mistake I should have done that a lot earlier turned out they ship everywhere in Europe but they only accept returns for free in France and I am based in Germany oh well should have looked better fine the umbrella was 35 euros shipping it back is 690 in Europe so it's okay it's your worth exchanging it right turns out it's longer than 60 centimetres so it's specific Goods blahblah shipping cost 18 euros conclusion for me I really don't want to leave that umbrella on the subway or in a restaurant somewhere concluding for you before you purchase anything of course look at the return policy it will avoid a lot of trouble there are many websites that will literally ship anywhere in the world but then they'll make it very difficult or costly for you to return anything I think that's unfair and it sucks the good thing for for you for us customers in pretty much every country by now there is a legal obligation for commercial websites to display transparently where they ship to where they take returns from which costs if any that has to be displayed somewhere on the website where consumers can actually find it so the law is very precise about that if you look usually at the bottom of the website in the future area with contact social media but while you have the terms and conditions and you have the shipping in return policy it has to be stated transparently in there so if you actually look for it you will find the info you need number four somehow it doesn't look and or feel the way I expected it to and I'm disappointed you probably had that one before I had before I studied fashion the government on the picture on the website looks great it falls nicely it has never been washed ironed manipulated or dry-cleaned in any way it's never going to look better than that so how to avoid disappointment once you receive the stuff you ordered always check the material the fabric composition and the constructions those two parameters alone can make a huge difference in the look and feel and in the durability of the clothing that you're purchasing very often when the cut looks complex but somehow the price looks ok they saved money on the fabric that's the first thing where they literally cut all the corners if you see a dress that looks like silk but costs less than hundred euros it's probably in polyester or in acetate as I say it doesn't breathe it smells when you sweat and loses its color and turns into another color when you expose it to sunlight that's the kind of thing that you want to know think prom dresses they offer in acetate they're in a fabric you can't dance in which is a contradiction for a prom dress if you feel that you don't know enough about the properties of the fabrics I've done a video series on that natural fibres synthetic fibers what they're good at what they are not good at how they get combined to improve the properties of the fabric etc I will link here in the corner and down below in the description all those videos and then you have the care instructions for instance if you this list of icons what does it mean it means that you can't watch the comments not even by hint you can't iron it you can't bleach it you can't tumble dry it and you can't dryclean it how on earth are you supposed to take care of a garment like that if I see those icons I won't buy it in the first place I wouldn't know how to clean it after wearing it just once it's waste in my opinion it's not a garment that I want to own at all so I wouldn't order it if you feel that you want to know more about what all these icons mean I have an older video about that which is called how to care for your clothes I will also link it here and and down below for you guys with these tips I hope that you feel more confident a bit better equipped for the next time you're gonna shop online if you feel just a bit smarter about this topic thumbs up thank you very much and before you're off to watch the other videos that are linked in the description don't forget to subscribe to this channel if you're interested in fashion I upload a new video every Wednesday and every Sunday so see you very soon again okay

  1. Who wants to share shopping mistakes? 😅 This way it won't happen to other shoppers. I went first and shared my fails. Happy Wednesday 💋☀️!

  2. I like reading Amazon reviews for clothing products.  People will give their feedback with regards to how the clothing holds up to washing/drying and any defects discovered.  They also are able to post pictures of what they look like in the garment.  I like to see how real people look in it, not just the models!

  3. Oh, one time I ordered a white summer dress and it looked really pretty on the model, but I completely forgot to check what it was made from (I know, stupid mistake). Well, when the dress came, turned out that it was made from very stretchy and cheap material that was COMPLETELY see-through. Like I mean you could see even nude underwear under it, and not wearing underwear was not an option ‘cause the dress was pretty short. So I ended up wearing it as a beachwear with bikinis under. At least now I never forget to check the material before ordering

  4. I envy women who has the same size always. Mine is always changing. Recently I lost a lot of weight and started training three times a week, so the size and the shape is changing for a better direction.

  5. About a year ago I really smartened up about online shopping, or maybe I just nailed down what I currently like, I never buy anything cropped, nothing with a fly, and nothing with more than a one inch heel. Everything I have must have stretch + feel comfortable.

  6. I have a long torso too (and not so long legs, in proportion). I'm 174 cm (5'6?), but I'm small busted and normal weight. So most t-Shirts and Pullovers and blouses fit in size M ir size S, in the width. Problem is because I am not short and on top of that have an extra long torso, most of the tops are too short for me.
I don't understand the logic of designers who say I'll make the size M shorter in length than the size M. Sometimes an obese lady needs size L, but she is short, so it will be too long for her. I need size S or M in width, but missing the length. :-/

  7. That umbrella situation is illegal, they cannot choose to accept return only from France. EU consumer law applies, so you have the extended 2 years guarantee for faulty goods, and a right to a refund. You had the right to return the item even if you had simply changed your mind (within 14 days). But even before EU even existed a seller had to refund a faulty item. If it's the carrier's fault, the buyer gets a refund from the seller, and the seller gets a refund with the carrier.
That kind of companies clearly aren't worthy of support.

  8. Thanks for this advice! I've had so much trouble buying clothes – especially online – and you explained so many of the reasons why.

  9. I look I've in the US & am currently a plus sized woman (actively losing weight at a sedate pace). Do you make any clothing that would fit me (I'm between a 20 – 22 right now). Btw…Love your videos!! I've been binge watching for the past several days, lol!

  10. No no no no… if you get sent a broken, wrong, or defective item, you either have them send you a new item for FREE (and trash the other one), or you get FREE return shipping. If they try to charge you for that; that's fraud: you didnt get what you paid for! – call up your credit card and cancel the charge, report the company to the BBB, and never buy from that company again!

  11. Be careful using PayPal. Some companies can not refund your money and must give you store credit. I saw this on a review and sure enough, it is in the return policy.

  12. In order for me to combat many of these issues I have limited the places where I will shop online. Specifically, I tried to shop at places that I have been able to visit in person. There's a store where I'm familiar with their sizing, if I go online I generally know what to expect there as well. I know this isn't always possible but, when it is an option, I take it.

  13. These tips are very helpful. The laundry facilities that I have at my apartments aren't very good but knowing these tips will help me to take care of my clothes and gives me confidence to purchase well made garments, since I now know how to take care of them.

  14. Can you talk more about fabrics that make you stink? I have noticed I never have BO issues with natural fabrics (cotton, wool, silk, linen) but with some polyester blends it's awful! Why is this and is there any way to know which garments will make me stink and which won't? There is such a broad range of quality in synthetics, it seems.

  15. Love love love your videos! I will save so much heartache and regret by applying the principles you teach. Thank you for the knowledge you have imparted upon your viewers!

  16. I try to choose clothing by my preferred designers as well. I already know the size I choose will be correct and the sizing true. If I’m not familiar with the designer……the piece of clothing will be a gamble. I followed the size guide and the top ended up being much too large for me. I don’t always remember to check the return policy either, I’m guilty of that as well.

  17. The red top is absolutely good on you! i just don't understand why you always want long tops. the problem is that your pants are too low waist. i think you need high waist ones, and then your legs will look i proportion to your torso, and the top will make your torso look a bit shorter. Witch means you will look higher. but for some reason you always dress to make look your torso even longer. you look longer, but not taller and not leaner. this really started to bother me, i just need too type this comment. not meant to hurt you, just advice and my opinion.

  18. My main problem is finding tops that a are not to long, I find most t shirts are meant to hit males around 178-188 cm I'm 169 cm so it's normally to long
