on a spit of land at the northern tip of the New Jersey Shore rises one of the state's great landmarks Sandy Hook lighthouse New Jersey's coastline can be treacherous and shipwrecks endangered lives and property one of only 11 lighthouse is built in the 13 colonies Sandy Hook was first lit on June 11th 1764 it remains in operation today the oldest functioning lighthouse in the country Sandy Hook began to shine 12 years before the American Revolution lit by 48 oil blazes realizing its value British troops successfully defended the lighthouse against an attack by Continental soldiers in June of 1776 and retained control of it through most of the war for independence over the years Sandy Hook light was joined on the Jersey coast by dozens of other lighthouses twin lights absecon old Barney and others sent streams of light far into the darkness of the Atlantic they still do silent beacons from another time illuminating the past as well as the coast it happened here new jersey is a production of Kane University in cooperation with the New Jersey Historical Commission enriching the present by exploring New Jersey's past
